The REAL Hawaii
Roadrunner Network Status Page
Deceptive marketing used to further Time-Warner / Oceanic Cable corporate goal: YOUR MONEY!
![]() Speeds up to 50 times faster than a 28.8Kbps modem. Use it as much as you want, there are no time charges. |
Is this a deceptive statement? Did they forget to tell you there will be times when your connection will be slower than a 28.8kbps modem? |
High-speed access to the Internet (up to 25 times faster than a 28.8 modem). Your time is valuable | Which is it? Time-Warner Hawaii says 50 times, Time-Warner Wisconsin says 25 times. |

Up to 50 times faster, 25 times faster, or
285 times faster?
Is this advertisement for Roadrunner deceptive? If Roadrunner can download 857 pages in under 2 seconds, while a 28.8kbps modem gets just 3, this would imply Roadrunner is over 285 times as fast as a 28.8k Modem! Note - As far as I know, the ad shown is not being used by Oceanic Hawaii Roadrunner at the present time, but it is typical of the expectations created among users by Oceanic and Roadrunner's National Advertising. Click on the ad to see it currently used by Road Runner of Northeast Ohio.

Oops. They forgot to tell you that they do not have adequately trained and sufficient support staff to actually answer the phone or respond to your e-mail. Or, that they will tell you the problem is beyond their control and to contact their providers. Or that they take off on holidays, and overnight... And... |
Hawaii Roadrunner Advertisement:
West Hawaii Today, 7-Jan-01: Deceptive
As you can see in the close-up below, it appears Roadrunner service was used to transmit the advertisement to the newspaper: it is missing letters - "Roadrunner" appears as " UNNE "; "High Speed Online" appears as "Hi h S ee Nline" and "Let's Go." appears as "Let's G ." The same ad appears again in 9-Jan-01 West Hawaii Today, but with a different missing block of the Roadrunner himself! Audio and video clips play almost instantly? Big web pages open the second you click on them? I don't think so! |

"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected." -- Sun Tzu, The Art of War, (Translated by James Clavell), Dell Publishing, New York, NY 10036 (1983).
